HARDWOODS

Black Oak

Able to thrive on poor and varied soils.

Has deeply furrowed bark and on mature trees is nearly black.

This moderately growing oak tree grows on dry uplands, slopes and ridges.

The green leaves have a notably velvety underside

Fastest growing of all oaks!


Full sun


Excellent for lining streets as it is clean


Prefers sandy to rich loamy soil


Green foliage turns deep red in fall

 
River Birch

Fastest grower!


Fall color is yellow


Thin reddish-brown to black bark peels in winter


Full to partial sun


Excellent for low swampy areas (prefers streambanks,
ponds, swampy areas)


Can tolerate standing water for several weeks at a time


Immune to Birch Borer

 
White Oak

Large, stately tree that grows up to over 100 feet tall


White oak bark is whitish or light gray, varying from scaly to
irregularly platy or ridged and furrowed


Does best on coarse, deep, moist, well-drained soil


It is well adapted to heavy soils and north and east-facing slopes.
White oak is moderately resistant to ice breakage


Tolerant of a range of soil conditions and fairly drought tolerant

 
ORNAMENTAL
American Elderberry

Very decorative when in bloom; elder flowers later than most
shrubs


Elderberries are also attractive to makers of pies, jellies and
wine


Numerous 1/4 fragrant white flowers emerge from late June into
August


Fruits ripen from late July into September


Grows best in full sunlight

 

American Hazelnut

Multi stemmed shrub with a rounded top & wide-spreading base


It bears annual, abundant crops of small, sweet tasting nuts
